Egypt plans to replace tuk-tuks with minivans in major cities and governorates, spokesperson for the Egyptian Ministry of Development Khaled Qassem announced. The minivan replacement process is underway, and the cost of replacement will be proportional to a driver’s income, he said. Minivans will be able to transport six, seven or eight passengers, he explained. Moreover, a unified tariff would be set for operating a tuk-tuk in side streets or villages, in addition to coordination with the Ministry of Military Production to assemble minivans in Egypt. Egypt has stopped important tuk-tuks for a year now, as the tiny vehicles have an increasingly bad reputation for their link to crime and accidents.
