'Electronic pickpocketing' video outdated, M'sia's contactless payment cards safe, says bank association

In a statement, ABM clarified that a recent posting of a video on Facebook featuring “electronic pickpocketing” of contactless payment cards was outdated and not applicable in today's electronic transactions. ABM highlighted that the video was made several years ago in the United States where many contactless cards were still using magnetic stripes. EMV is a global specification for bank chip cards which prevents the cloning of cards. An EMV chip helps to reduce fraud as it is very difficult and costly to counterfeit. Currently, all contactless payment cards issued in Malaysia have an EMV chip.
