With their alarmist views on AI, Musk and Hawking have lent voice to the internal anxieties that we all have about the future. Is there anything can we do to ensure that machine intelligence will never threaten us? This improbability can be further enhanced by making AI systems safe. What Musk and Hawking mean by the term is an information-processing entity that surpasses "human intelligence". But Musk and Hawking also point to the possibility that humanity could be exterminated by a non-conscious machine intelligence that goes haywire.
