Gareth Southgate is considering returning Wayne Rooney to the midfield position he occupied with mixed results at the European Championship finals in his first match in charge of England’s senior team against Malta tomorrow. The England captain trained with Dele Alli in a midfield role at St George’s Park yesterday as Southgate continued his preparations for the World Cup qualifier at Wembley. Southgate has yet to name his team, but, on the basis of training, appears to be leaning towards using Rooney in a deeper role.
