The stands at Ffos Las will remain empty today after racing was called off because of the flu outbreak that brought about the cancellation of three other UK meetings James DaviesRacing authorities took the dramatic step last night of cancelling all four of today’s meetings in Britain after a confirmed outbreak of equine influenza. The cards at Huntingdon, Doncaster, Ffos Las and Chelmsford will not go ahead after an outbreak known to have affected at least three horses was discovered in a British trainer’s yard. That yard sent runners out at Ludlow and Ayr yesterday, potentially exposing dozens of other horses to the disease. Horses that have contracted equine influenza have a high fever, coughing, nasal discharge and sometimes swelling of the lymph nodes. The incubation period is a matter of days but recovery for a racehorse typically takes a few weeks and could last up to six months.
