Libya collapsed after the 2011 rebellion against Mu’ammar Al-Kadafi and split between eastern and western factions in 2014. They agreed to establish a national unity government until the parliamentary and presidential elections on December 24th. Presidential candidate Speaker of Parliament Aguila Sale will issue a law setting the first round of the presidential election on December 24, with a second round of final votes and subsequent parliamentary elections. Approximately 98 candidates enrolled in the presidential election – including those deemed unacceptable to parts of the country or strong armed groups. If the peace process collapses, there is a risk that eastern factions could re-form a separatist government in the war with Tripoli’s Doveiba administration.
