Extra-billing crackdown halted while court deliberates private health care


VANCOUVER—Private health clinics across the province will avoid facing fines for illegal extra-billing after the B.C. While the province’s crackdown on extra-billing by private clinics was supposed to begin Monday, Cambie Surgeries Corporation filed an injunction to halt the fines, as a part of Cambie Surgeries’ ongoing constitutional challenge against the province for the right of patients to choose private care. Dr. Brian Day, head of Cambie Surgeries Corporation, in an operating room at his clinic. On a previous day in court, Penner also argued that Cambie Surgeries was attempting to “cover up” illegal extra-billing through undocumented payments. Terrie Hendrickson, co-ordinator for the BC Health Coalition, said the province should rule to end the illegal practice.
