It is May 2008. A young chap called David Cameron sweeps into the Cheshire town of Crewe, to be greeted by a couple of Labour activists dressed in top hat and tails like they are off for a day at the races. Because this Cameron chap is posh, and probably wears a top hat in bed before rising to eat a homeless person for breakfast and spend the day burning down NHS hospitals. And despite the withering social commentary of Labour’s millinery, the Tories won the Crewe and Nantwich by-election with almost half of the total vote in a seat that had always been Labour. In the intervening 12 years, Labour has forgotten that lesson time and again.
