Dunedin police and Fire and Emergency New Zealand are investigating a suspicious fire in the central city, which they say could have caused serious injury. Fire appliances from Dunedin City Fire Station were called to a wheelie-bin fire outside a flat in High St, near Melville St, about 3.30am on Saturday. A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said the fire had jumped to the window frame of the flat and had the potential to also set the building on fire. However, the fire was deemed to be suspicious and an investigation had begun. • Dunedin police (03) 471-4800, Crimestoppers 0800 555-111.
