Firefighters demand end to pet rescuesTAIPEI, Taiwan -- Firefighters on Friday demanded senior administrative intervention to stop first-responders from being sent out to perform mundane yet often dangerous tasks such as rescuing pets or removing nests. At a gathering outside the Executive Yuan, National Association for Firefighters' Rights members demanded the Executive Yuan spearhead a cross-ministerial effort to clarify firefighters' responsibilities. Yu added firefighters were not qualified to perform tasks such as catching snakes or removing wasps nests, having never been given appropriate training. Employing firefighters to perform such tasks also put civilian lives at risk, by delaying the response to actual fires, Cheng said. Protesters however, were still dismayed at the Executive Yuan unwillingness to commit to leading talks with ministerial agencies under its jurisdiction.
