Following the announcement of the death of an intern doctor at Ain Shams University Hospitals, Hossam al-Feky, the Egyptian Medical Syndicate confirmed in a statement on Monday that the cause of death was meningitis. The syndicate indicated that the doctor had treated a patient while performing his professional duties. This comes amidst rumors circulating on social media platforms alleging the spread of the infection and a recurrence of meningitis cases. In its first official statement, the Ministry of Health and Population confirmed that that there are currently no meningitis outbreaks in Egypt, and that the reported cases are isolated incidents within the expected annual range. It added that the Ministry’s Preventive Medicine sector continues to implement a comprehensive strategy to combat the disease.
