'Serious Sam: The First Encounter' is free for PC gamers until August 26. In fact, as far as unfettered joy through wanton destruction goes, things don’t get much better than the multi-award-winning 2001 classic Serious Sam: The First Encounter, which is now yours for free–but only for a very limited time. Thanks to GOG.com, the frantic FPS debut of Sam “Serious” Stone–think Duke Nukem, but without the rampant misogyny–is being made free for 48 hours, until 8am EST on August 26. It’s a clever selection, given that GOG is promoting the long-awaited return of the character in Serious Sam 4 on September 24. If the classic shooter passed you by, Serious Sam: The First Encounter was far from overlooked at the time; in fact, it was named game of the year by GameSpot, alongside the marvellous Grand Theft Auto III.
