This report will be specifically about the outright new movies, namely The Bye Bye Man, Sleepless and Monster Trucks. The top new release and/or wide expansion on Friday was, shockingly, The Bye Bye Man. The cheap ($7.4 million) horror romp from STX Entertainment, concerning a handful of young adults bedeviled by a curse that turns them homicidal, earned $5.43 million yesterday. Paramount/Viacom Inc.’s Monster Trucks did about as well as expected, which is to say not terribly well at all. But truth be told, the only problem with Monster Trucks is that it cost so much to make.
