The legislation, more commonly known as the Women’s Reservation Bill, 2023 was passed by Parliament in a special session, the first one in the new Parliament building, on September 21, 2023. The Lok Sabha passed the Bill with 454 votes in favour and two against. The timeline for delimitation, which is expected to increase the number of Lok Sabha seats, continues to be ambiguous. Of the total members in the 17th Lok Sabha, 15% are women, while in the State Assemblies, women on average constitute 9% of the total members.
