GrainCorp sentenced following New Plymouth fat discharge

A company that spilled around 60 tonnes of fat, blocking part of New Plymouth's sewer system, has been fined $84,000. On Tuesday, GrainCorp Liquid Terminals NZ Ltd appeared in the Environment Court at New Plymouth for sentence on two charges in relation to the overnight September 5, 2019, fat spill. The fat drained freely into the trade waste network, where it cooled and solidified, causing a blockage at the Ngāmotu waste water pumping station. In court, Judge Brian Dwyer said the effects of the waste water discharge were more serious than that of the tallow. He said the “most staggering fact” was the absence of an alarm system to deter and warn of any discharge.
