A self-administered jab could halt a heart attack in its earliest stages and save thousands of lives in the UK each year. Heart attacks typically occur when a clot blocks the blood supply to the heart. Heart attack symptoms tend to build over time, and at an early stage patients may have only mild chest pain or discomfort. The drug is about to be used in larger trials with patients who have had a heart attack. More than 100,000 hospital admissions in the UK each year are due to heart attacks, according to the British Heart Foundation, and heart and circulatory diseases cause nearly 170,000 deaths each year.
