We would get ang pow from Mum and Dad early in the morning of the first day of Chinese New Year. Regardless of the amount in them, we were excited to get them and immediately hid them in our pillows, only to be opened on the 15th day of Chinese New Year. Only during Chinese New Year would we get to snack on “garbage”, as what Mum would term it. Whatever was given to us had to last us until the 15th day; they would not be replenished if we finished them before then. Staying up all night on the eve to usher in the first day of Chinese New Year was a must.
