The Danish government has been labelled “unsatisfactory” and “ineffective” in an audit of its ballooning piglet trade published today. In 2008 3.2 million live pigs were exported from Denmark; by 2018 that number had risen to 9.6 million. Danish pigs have been bred to produce large litters, so Danish piglets are cheaper than elsewhere in Europe. Every day at least 5 million creatures are in transit, in a secretive global trade in live farm animals. Because of the superior health status and genetics there is however a great demand for Danish pigs from other countries.
