In a document released by the NPPA on Friday, it said distributors and hospitals make exorbitant profits on knee implants. The report showed that while the maximum landing price (import price) of knee replacement implants is Rs65,782, the MRP at which it is sold is Rs4,13,059 which is more than six times the landing price. Giving example of specific knee implants, the report showed that while the maximum landing cost of tibial plate, which is used to resurface the tibia bone in the knee, is Rs17,492, its MRP is almost seven times — Rs 1,22,336. The report added that hospitals and distributors make around 120% to 135% profits on various knee implants such as femoral, tibial plate, inserts and patella. He added the while some local companies have started manufacturing knee replacement implants, none of them are FDA approved.
