Research by molecular biologist Raúl da Silva Armando Chomela reveals that guano supports diverse cave life. Using cutting-edge DNA techniques like metabarcoding, he analyzes bat diets to understand what they eat and the rate of production of guano. Beyond science, the work carries economic and environmental stakes, as local communities rely on guano—rich in phosphorus and nitrogen—for fertilizer and income. However, overharvesting threatens both cave ecosystems and livelihoods.
