For Ms. Roper, the goal was to create a piece that would delight readers by capturing a picture of the diversity of the city — a slice of life. After some deliberation, they went with Central Park because “it is iconic New York,” Ms. Roper said. Ms. Roper recruited 23 journalists and 10 photographers from inside The Times; students and freelancers also helped out. After waiting for the aerial shots from the helicopter to be taken, the groups charged across the park. A helicopter had to be used: Large parts of the city, including Central Park, have rules against flying drones.
