IIM-Ahmedabad to demolish 14 dorms designed by Louis Kahn

They will be replaced with new buildings, reports The Times of India on Friday. Although Kahn began working on the design in 1962, the building was not completed until 1982, eight years after his death. In a 11-page letter on Wednesday to the alumni, IIM-A Director Errol D’Souza said the dorm buildings were unsafe for living now. Currently, the dormitories can house 500 students and the plan is to build 800 rooms in a new hostel complex, reports said. Rabindra Vasavada, one of the first architects to join Kahn as an assistant in the 1960s, said the decision was an erasure of history itself.
