Houses on fire as lava from erupting volcano reaches Icelandic town Miranda BryantHouses caught fire in the fishing town of Grindavík in southwest Iceland after a volcano erupted for the second time in less than a month. A first eruption began at 8am when a fissure opened in the ground about 450 meters from the city. Protective barriers of earth and rock pushed lava from the first fissure away from the city. However, a second crack opened around noon on the edge of the city, measuring about 100 meters in the evening, and this lava swallowed the houses. Jets of bright orange lava flowed out and a huge cloud of smoke rose against the dark sky.
