It will replace the Suomi-NPP (launched as a prototype testbed) as the primary U.S. polar orbiting weather satellite. The role of satellite data is vital to the accuracy of your weather forecasts. Their own experiments indicate that the forecast would have been wrong without geostationary and polar-orbiting satellite data in the model. NOAAOver 90% of data ingested into weather models is from weather satellites.
