Rahman is unique because he is believed to be the first Muslim ever elected to the Georgia legislature, reports news portal 11Alive. Georgia Senate District 5 is in Gwinnett County, and it is one of the most ethnically diverse legislative districts in America. Born and raised in Bangladesh, Sheikh Rahman moved to the United States in early 1981.He learned some tough lessons as an immigrant, and faced his share of racism in the US. He decided to run for the state senate this year and won the polls, beating a 14-year veteran of the legislature. Sheikh Rahman defeated Democrat State Senator Curt Thompson of Norcross in the primary by more than two to one.
