Important variations in dog ear anatomy

At the 2023 New York Vet Show in New York, New York, Andrew Rosenberg, DVM, DACVD, with Animal Dermatology Group, Inc., sat down with dvm360® to outline breed and individual variations in dogs' ear anatomy. Andrew Rosenberg, DVM, DACVD: The most important thing to know about a dog's ear anatomy is that there are breed variations and individual variations, most importantly, tympanic membrane. The appearance can look very different between individual dogs. And as far as breeds go, there are some breeds with naturally stenotic, or narrowed ear canals. The Shar-Pei is the most classically described dog like this, but also our brachycephalic dogs like Boston terriers and French bulldogs tend to have more stenotic ear canals than most other breeds.
