(Al Jazeera News) – Israeli missiles struck a military position near Damascus overnight and Syria’s air defence system thwarted them, Syrian state television said on Saturday. An Israeli military spokeswoman declined to comment on reports of the attack. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the strike was likely carried out by the Israeli military and targeted several government military bases in Al Kiswah on the southwest outskirts of Damascus. Sources told Al Jazeera that the Israeli raid was aimed at government military sites and positions of the Lebanese Hezbollah movement, and that the sound of large explosions caused by the raid was heard in Damascus and its surroundings.
