Jen Gerson: As Notley and Kenney fight over gay-straight alliances, Alberta's students are watching


After heated back-and-forth on the issue, a piece of legislation called Bill 10 emerged which the legislature passed in 2015. For conservatives, the political lessons should have been hard to miss: Let the kids have their damn clubs. Bill 24 would expand on the rights established in Bill 10, guaranteeing some privacy protections for kids who join GSAs. GSAs may be common in downtown Calgary or Edmonton, but they’re still contentious in many rural areas and in Alberta’s religious schools. Some kids trying to set up the clubs have faced extraordinarily petty obstacles from nervous school administrators — hence the demand for Bill 202 in the first place.
