Jio: Airtel overtakes Jio in active user market share in October amid intense fight for subscribers, Telecom News, ET Telecom


Kolkata: Bharti Airtel has overtaken Reliance Jio in terms of active users’ market share in October, regaining the No. The Indo-UK telecom joint venture between Britain’s Vodafone Plc and the Aditya Birla Group, lost 20 million active users since April this year.Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s ( Trai ) active or visitor location register (VLR) data is a key metric that reflects the actual number of customers actively using a mobile network. Only Airtel’s VLR ratio exceeds the pre-Covid level, it added.As per the regulator’s data, Airtel had a higher active user share than Jio during January-March 2020. From May onwards, Jio took the lead but Airtel started narrowing the gap again from August, nearly catching up in September, and finally pulling ahead in October. It added 3 million active users in October, helped by strong gains in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat, taking its active user base to 320 million, pushing Jio—which added 1.1 million active users—to the second spot with 319 million such users.
