One thing you quickly realize from reading newspapers is how often people in public life find themselves doing shady or stupid things they never thought themselves capable of. Consider recent headlines about the trial of former Dalton McGuinty chief of staff David Livingston and his former deputy Laura Miller, charged with allegedly destroying alleged documents in the alleged political alleged cancellation of two alleged gas plants. Presumably no one who enters public life thinks they will flame out in scandalNobody. Certainly not because any of the principals entered political life thinking: Here’s the one I want them to remember me by. Including recalling bad headlines you had, or nearly had, if the resulting cold sweat helps concentrate your mind.
