more-inNoted academic and writer Kancha Ilaiah was detained and sent back to Hyderabad by the local police shortly before he was to participate in the State conference of the Goat and Sheep Rearers Association here on Sunday. The incident drew sharp criticism from Mr Ilaiah and a host of leaders representing various mass organisations, who described it as an attempt by the State to “gag” freedom of expression. However, police sources claimed that Mr Ilaiah was sent back to Hyderabad with police escort to avert any “law and order” issue. The police cited the instances of protests staged by the Arya Vysya JAC over the book penned by Mr Ilaiah on the Vysya community in recent months. Mr Ilaiah had camped at the CPI (M)'s district office after his arrival in the town from the State capital earlier in the day.
