Rove, master Republican strategist behind the George W. Bush administration in the 2000s, lost his mother to suicide when he was 30. Karl Rove and David Axelrod, strategists who worked in the Bush and Obama presidential administrations, presented a five-hour-long contribution to the Master Class series, an online education series from celebrity teachers. When it comes to art, for instance, Rove and Axelrod talk about how much thought goes into slogans and logos. What’s missing from the master class, however, is any real foray into those toxic practices of campaigning, except for glancing, cautionary references. Axelrod, illustratively, tells how the Obama campaign made significant use of “ethnographic” diaries that they commissioned among some online focus-group participants.
