Below, Kelly McParland fires up the barbecue. All summer we see TV ads depicting suburban males happily commanding a flaming grill of burgers and weenies, beer in hand, as the kiddies romp in the background. I can follow a recipe to the letter, but it won’t turn out the way it looks on the page. One reason may be that Mother McParland raised her children to eat their meat red. One year ago I barbecued precisely one hamburger over an entire summer.
