While he appreciated the seat was historically National's, having been held by former foreign affairs minister Murray McCully for 30 years, "I'm white middle class male and I couldn't really see a long-term future within this party," he told RNZ's Morning Report. Labour leader Andrew Little said on Tuesday it wasn't possible for everybody to get a winnable position on the list.
