Leafs trade Carrick, waive McElhinney, Pickard

The Maple Leafs traded defenceman Connor Carrick and put goalies Curtis McElhinney and Calvin Pickard on waivers Monday, getting down to the roster limit of 23. Being a decade younger than McElhinney probably didn't hurt but it doesn't necessarily mean we've seen the end of McElhinney. Sparks could, in theory, simply practice at the NHL level while McElhinney gets the spot starts behind Frederik Andersen. When William Nylander signs, the Leafs will be one over the limit, and somebody -- probably from among them -- will have to be waived. THE TRADE: The Leafs got a seventh-round pick in 2019 from the Dallas Star for Carrick, who provides some offence and is a coveted right-handed shot.
