Regarding your May 18 editorial “Trump’s Immigration Progress”: One way to understand the merits and weaknesses of the president’s recently announced immigration policy is to understand the difference between the free-agency approach to forming a baseball team compared with forming a team by relying on the draft and the minor-league system. There are benefits to a system that makes it easier for people with specialized skills to enter our nation, and it is a good policy in the short term. Yet it would contradict who we are as a nation to make this approach the bedrock of our immigration policy.
