Libya parliament says ‘impossible’ to hold presidential vote

FILE – Seif al-Islam, right, the son and one-time heir apparent of late Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi registers his candidacy for the country’s presidential elections next month, in Sabha, Libya, Sunday, Nov. 14, 2021. A Libyan parliamentary committee said Wednesday, Dec. 21, that it has become “impossible” to hold a long-awaited presidential vote in two days as scheduled, in a major blow to international efforts to end a decade of chaos in the oil-rich country. The vote had faced many challenges, including disputes over the laws governing the elections and occasional infighting among armed groups. The October 2020 cease-fire led to the formation of a transitional government with elections scheduled for Dec. 24. The fate of that government is now unclear, as the Parliamentary committee said the government’s mandate ends on Dec. 24.
