With every reported assault on African workers and migrants, the issue of migration surges back into the headlines. Is the goal not to safeguard rights and establish justice for both migrants and citizens alike, using binding legal texts to ensure fairness and equity for all? Should these laws not preserve the dignity of migrants, outline the legal protocols for handling violations, protect the rights of citizens within their own borders, and uphold the state’s international obligations regarding the rights of migrants and immigrants? The public frustration over the visible increase of migrants in our streets and squares is understandable. What is most urgent now, however, is respecting the human rights of migrants, regardless of their nationality, religion, or ethnicity.
