Long-term care workers face “constant” violence on the job, with 80 per cent reporting first-hand experience with physical assault in the workplace, according to a new poll. The survey of more than 1,000 long-term care workers in Ontario found almost half of respondents experienced physical violence such as pushing or hitting on a daily or weekly basis. Those polled included 1,294 personal support workers and registered practical nurses in Ontario long-term care homes represented by 26 different CUPE locals. Moore believes that is because workplace violence is often treated like “part of the job” rather than a risk. Hurley said while the demand for long-term care is intensifying as Ontario’s population ages, staffing levels have not kept up.
