A Marine Atlantic ferry was assisting with the rescue of a man and his dog on a sailboat in distress off the coast of Cape Breton Monday. The man is refusing to leave the struggling vessel, according to Darrell Mercer, a Marine Atlantic spokesperson. Maj. Amber Bineau of the Canadian Coast Guard said they received a signal from a personal locator beacon on the sailboat at about 2:15 p.m. Coast guard ship en routeMeanwhile, the coast guard's ship Spindrift is heading toward the sailboat with an expected arrival time of 5:15 p.m. A Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary boat is also en route, said Bineau.
