Born to an IAS officer father, he belonged to a family that migrated to India from Pakistan during Partition and lived in a refugee camp. He was among the six founding members of HCL Technologies alongside the likes of Arjun Malhotra and India's fourth richest man Shiv Nadar. He began a career in sales for DCM Data Products, one of the large players in the computer industry in India at the time. Today, it is one of the largest IT firms in the country with a market cap of over Rs 320000 crore. Chowdhry later became a mentor, educationist and activist.
