More sniffer dogs needed by Sarawak enforcement agencies to combat drug trade

KUCHING: Enforcement agencies in Sarawak are in need for more sniffer dogs to help with operations to reduce the number of drug trafficking cases in the state. Sarawak’s Drug Eradication Action Council chairman Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said currently there are only three sniffer dogs placed under the care of the state Customs Department and the number is severly insufficient. “Three sniffer dogs are not enough to cover the entire state,” said Karim, who is also the State Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister. Karim also revealed that most drugs were smuggled into the state using courier services. “Most of these drug addicts arrested are unemployed and their age range between 25 and 40.
