A mosquito trap in the City of Markham has tested positive for West Nile virus. “West Nile virus can be passed through the bite of an infected mosquito and may cause serious illness,” said Dr. Karim Kurji, York Region’s medical officer of health. Cases of mosquitoes found carrying the virus aren’t uncommon in Toronto, according to Toronto Public Health, which lays 22 traps each week to monitor for the virus between mid-June and September. West Nile has been detected at 16 of its traps since mid-June. There have yet to be any cases of the West Nile virus in humans in Ontario so far this year.
