A newly registered QEII covenant near Te Anau, that covers a wetland, is understood to be the largest piece of land protected in Southland, if not the South Island. The covenant officially unveiled on Tuesday, is on the Pāmu Farms of New Zealand (Landcorp) property, Mt Hamilton Station, near Te Anau, and covers 1456ha. The McKenzie Covenant was named after Phil McKenzie, who had been employed by Pāmu for 37 years. The land has 140 native plant species and 15 bird species - many that have been classified as endangered.
