Moscow – Russia’s foreign minister is afraid that Russia is preparing to invade Ukraine, claiming that NATO wants to bring Ukraine into the alliance amid heightened tensions over NATO expansion. Russia then demanded that NATO never allow it to join the Ukrainian alliance, stop deploying NATO weapons near the Russian border, and promise to roll back troops from Eastern Europe. Nikolai Patrushev, head of the Russian Security Council, rejected Western warnings about the planned aggression on Sunday. Viklov also emphasized Russia’s claim that NATO expansion is a threat because it is acting aggressively outside of its member states. The two territories of eastern Ukraine have been under the control of Russian-backed rebels since 2014 after Russia annexed the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine.
