Nearly 600 rescued migrants get off an Italian charity boat

According to a European NGO, the Ocean Viking vessel operated by SOSMediterranee carried 572 people, including about 180 minors, after participating in six separate operations in the search and rescue areas of Malta and Libya. After asking the European Union to find a safe port for migrants, the group said the situation on board was deteriorating due to tension and fatigue among the rescued people. SOS Mediterranee said all migrants will be tested for COVID-19 after getting off the boat. Several charity boats have been confiscated in Italy in recent months after authorities reported irregularities on board. Charity MSF has complained that Italian authorities are using such tests to prevent ships from returning to the sea, where many migrants die.
