Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday said the cabinet will vote next week on a plan to airlift 2,000 Ethiopian Jews to Israel. The government policy on the immigration of Ethiopian Jews in recent years has been rife with abandoned pledges. She announced last month that the government would airlift 2,000 Ethiopian Jews, drawing mixed reactions from activists campaigning for all to be allowed to move to Israel. Some 22,000 were airlifted to Israel during Operation Moses in 1984 and Operation Solomon in 1991, mostly from the Beta Israel community. The Falash Mura are Ethiopian Jews whose ancestors converted to Christianity, often under duress, generations ago.
