Over the years, the Eritrean government has faced a range of criticisms from several western nations because of its controversial diaspora tax program. Dutch Foreign Minister Halbe Zijlstra stated that the Eritrean top diplomat in the country was warned to end the Eritrean’s government practice of enforcing "diaspora tax" on Eritreans living in the European nation. The foreign minister also noted that the move did not mean the closure of Eritrea's consulate in The Hague.
