New coronavirus cases in the U.S. climbed to nearly 49,000 Friday while the total number of deaths topped 175,000 across the country, as new cases in more than 10 states trend upward. More than 5.6 million people in the U.S. have contracted Covid-19, accounting for just under a quarter of the global tally, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
