New Studies Support Yoga's Potential Role In Treating Depression

Depression is one of the most painful mental health disorders to live with—and while there are effective treatments, as most people know, they are far too few. Meditation and yoga have been shown to be good prospects in treating depression: Both brain studies and behavioral studies have shown that the practices do seem to have measureable effects on depression symptoms and well-being. Two studies from Center for Integrative Psychiatry in the Netherlands looked at the potential of yoga for people with chronic depression. They were already getting usual care (generally a combination of therapy and antidepressants), which they continued throughout the yoga treatment. Hopefully these kinds of questions will be addressed as part of a collaborative effort between the yoga world and the mental health world.
